The Spa Ritual – A Case Study

The Spa Ritual Building

Welcome to our new “case study” series where we take an in-depth look at some past construction and development projects we have completed at Knightsbridge Development Corporation. These articles will include a breakdown of the project, the requirements given to us by the clients, the challenges presented to us during the development (as well as our solutions), and some information on the finished construction and company in question. For our first case study, we take a closer look at the construction and project management of The Spa Ritual: one of our hospitality clients in Alberta, Canada.

The Spa Ritual Calgary

About The Spa Ritual

The Spa Ritual is a day spa in Calgary, Alberta which offers a wide range of health, beauty, and wellness services including facials, massages, body scrubs, manicures, pedicures, hair removal, eyelash tinting, and more. There are also some treatments for men, along with medical aesthetics such as CoolSculpting, Botox, Dermal Fillers, etc. Beyond individual treatments, The Spa Ritual offers customized spa packages for couples and groups as well.

The Spa Ritual pride themselves on being one of the most inclusive day spas in Canada, particularly for those with disabilities. They fully respect the independence, privacy, and dignity of those with disabilities by offering them the same services and opportunities as other clients. Their building is based at street level with no steps and is completely accessible by wheelchair. Their beds too can be adjusted by height to meet the needs of physically disabled people. They also have a great online platform which allows you to explore their services and book appointments with ease.

The Work – Challenges & Solutions

The work started for this construction project when we were approached by the owners to build a new health spa in Calgary, Alberta. We assisted in the site selection with the owners and ultimately chose the busy Crowfoot Crossing Shopping Centre due to its popular location and accessibility for The Spa Rituals clientele. Over 4000 square feet was identified and the work begun on 2016.

One of the challenges for this project was the budget that we had to adhere to. The construction budget was a total of $370 per square foot. For this project, we hired Smith & Smith as the designers and architects for the project, and eventually added Chandos Construction as the constructor along with Trotter & Morten and Petrin Mechanical. In the end, the team was able to complete this project on time and on budget.

Another challenge was ensuring the accessibility of the exterior and interior of the building for The Spa Rituals customers, with a particular focus on clients with disabilities. We helped in selecting a site which was on street level with an abundance of parking for customers. Likewise, each door, hallway and room allowed for complete access for customers with wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility devices.

The Spa Ritual Rooms

The Spa Ritual features a number of luxury rooms catered to individuals, couples and groups who want to indulge themselves in a range of beauty and wellness services. We were placed in charge with developing both the exterior and interior as apart of the design package, starting from inception all the way to the completed project. This included beautiful, intricate millwork that extends throughout the interior and gives each room a luxury finish.

We also constructed the sauna rooms, a therapeutic sauna complete with an infrared heating system, chromotherapy (illuminated colour therapy) and acoustic resonance therapy (sound wave) to help promote mind-body relaxation. There is also the Bali Sanctuary with heated, natural stone chaise loungers which are unique to the spa. The Som’ta Lounge features comfortable seating areas with Asian inspired décor and a bamboo fountain in the center. Finally, there is a Spa Bistro: located next to the Som’ta Lounge, the bistro is a small in-house dining room and restaurant which offers a select, order-in-advance menu of Spa cuisine.

For their private rooms, The Spa Ritual offers some great spaces which is ideal for singles, couples or small groups. The exclusive Royal Thai Suite provides a unique and unparalleled experience for clients looking for therapeutic massages and calming baths. This suite features the Bali Moon Tub, private changing areas, lounging, and shower facilities. Similarly, there is the Ylang-Ylang and Water Lily rooms for single or couple massages and facial treatments. The Tea Ceremony Room offers a selection of signature line botanical teas and the large aesthetics room offers five manicure and six pedicure stations for groups and individuals.

Conclusion

For this project we were with the clients from conception to the finished construction, completing both the interior and exterior design. We oversaw every part of this design from construction, fabrication, and installation of its many amenities. As a result, The Spa Ritual became the flagship spa for this company and has garnered adulation from clients and critics alike. As mentioned, we were able to complete this project on time, on budget, while exceeding the clients expectations.
